Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels claimed their fifth consecutive victory, defeating the Bowie Baysox, 6-4, in front of 7,316 at The Diamond on Saturday night. The win also netted the Squirrels the series victory and sent Bowie stumbling to their seventh straight loss.
The Squirrels jumped on Bowie starter Chorye Spoone immediately in the bottom of the first inning. Darren Ford led off the ballgame by cranking a double on one hop off the wall in left field. Brandon Crawford singled behind him to move him to third and Thomas Neal drove in the first run of the ballgame with an infield single up the middle.
Richmond was right back at it in the second, when three consecutive one-out singles from Jackson Williams, Nick Noonan and Clay Timpner loaded the bases. Spoone then walked Ford to force home Williams and Crawford lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Flying Squirrels a 3-0 advantage.
Bowie shaved a run off the Richmond lead against Squirrels' starter Clayton Tanner in the third inning. Pedro Florimon reached on an error on the shortstop Crawford with one out and came around on a ground-out, wild pitch and RBI single from Ryan Adams.
The run was added back to the Richmond lead in the home-half of the fourth inning. The Squirrels added an unearned run against Spoone when Noonan reached on an error by second baseman Paco Figueroa to start the frame. He moved to second on a wild pitch from Spoone and scored when Crawford blistered a single to center field for a 4-1 lead.
A Tanner walk to Danny Figueroa to open the fifth inning allowed the Baysox to climb back into the ballgame. Caleb Joseph followed with a single and Pedro Florimon brought in Figueroa with a single. Joseph moved to third on a passed ball and scored to trim the Richmond lead to 4-3 when Paco Figueroa sent a sacrifice fly to center field.
Once again the Squirrels wasted no time adding the padding back to their lead, plating a pair of unearned runs off of Bowie reliever Zach Clark in the bottom of the inning. Roger Kieschnick sparked the uprising with a one-out single and advanced to second when Andy D'Alessio reached on an error on first baseman Robbie Widlansky. Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Noonan brought in a run with a bounce-out to first base. Timpner then cracked an RBI double off the wall in right field for a 6-3 advantage.
Spoone (1-3) was saddled with the loss over four innings, surrendering four runs - three earned - on seven hits. Tanner (2-2) earned his second win of the season, allowing three runs - one earned - over five innings. He allowed just four hits, walking one and striking out three.
Right-hander Craig Whitaker worked a scoreless two innings of relief for Richmond through the seventh inning, and handed it off to fellow right-hander Daniel Turpen after allowing the lead-off man to reach to begin the eighth. Turpen cleaned up the eighth, then earned his first save of the season when he closed out the ballgame. He did allow a solo-home run to Widlansky leading off the ninth, but the blast only altered the final score of 6-4.
Timpner and Crawford each finished the ballgame with three hits, while five different Flying Squirrels contributed an RBI to the victory.
The final game of the three-game series is scheduled for 2:05 PM on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond. RHP Daryl Maday (3-0, 1.11) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Ryohei Tanaka (2-1, 3.57) for Bowie.
