Hickory Crawdads News Release

After playing well on the road the last week, the Hickory Crawdads committed a season-high five errors in losing game one of a four-game series to the Lexington Legends at L.P. Frans Stadium on Tuesday.

Hickory, which went 5-3 on its eight-game road trip, returned home and quickly fell in a hole.

Lexington, losers of six straight, took a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to lead-off batter Matthew Cusick's solo home run, two Legends singles and two Crawdads errors.

Hickory (8-5) would make its first of multiple comeback attempts in the third inning, when Austin McClune tripled in Matt Cavagnaro and scored on a Lexington throwing error on the very same play to make it 3-2.

After two Hickory errors led to a Lexington run in the top of the fifth, Jose De Los Santos singled in Cavagnaro for a run in the bottom half to make it 4-3. Lexington (3-10) then plated two in the top of the eighth, courtesy of back-to-back RBI hits by Jonathan Fixler and Roberto Mena. The Crawdads had one more comeback in them, as Hickory scored once in the bottom of the ninth and sent the tying run to the plate. But McClune's pop up to shallow left field with a runner on ended the Crawdads' hopes of another walk-off finish at L.P. Frans Stadium this season.

Lexington's Carlos Ladeuth earned the win (1-2, 3.38 ERA), allowing one earned run through six innings. Michael Felix (1-1, 1.00) took the loss for Hickory, lasting three innings. Felix allowed just three hits, struck out seven batters and walked none, but was forced to leave after defensive miscues ran his pitch count up early. Lexington's Jay Pacella earned the save.

Notable offensive performances for Hickory included De Los Santos (2-5, 2 RBI), Cavagnaro (2-3, 2 R) and Ronald Pena (2-3, R). First baseman Miles Durham also extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an eighth-inning single.

The Crawdads host the Legends for a day game Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Hickory will send new addition Emilis Guerrero to the hill to take on Lexington's Sergio Severino.
