Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads made it two wins in a row against the Lake County Captains with a 7-2 victory before 2,929 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium. C Doug Hogan, activated from the disabled list on Wednesday, extended his home run streak to three straight games with a solo bomb in the second inning tonight.
Lake County (9-7) got out to an early lead with an unearned run in the top of the first inning against LHP Martin Perez (4-5) and the Crawdads. CF Delvi Cid led off the inning with a single, then scored on the combination of a one-out infield single by 3B Adam Abraham and a throwing error by 3B Matt West to make it 1-0.
The Crawdads (9-6) came right back with runs in the first and second to take a 2-1 lead through two innings. CF David Paisano led off the bottom of the first with a double, before scoring on a two-out RBI single by West later in the inning. Hogan then led off the second inning with a solo home run over the left field wall to extend his homer streak and put the Crawdads in the lead.
LHP Martin Perez (4-5) cruised through the second and third, before allowing another unearned run to score in the top of the fourth, as the Captains tied the game, 2-2. RF Donnie Webb drew a one-out walk, and then attempted to steal second base. Hogan fired wide of the bag at second, enabling Webb to pop up and take third on a stolen base and throwing error combination. Perez then struck out DH John Allman for the inning's second out, but gave up a two-out RBI single to LF Bo Greenwell to score Webb and tie the game.
After Perez tossed a scoreless fifth inning, the Crawdads bats powered themselves back into the lead with a five-run bottom of the fifth. RF Eric Fry led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by LF Cristian Santana. SS Andres James followed with a bunt single, moving Fry to third base with only one out. Paisano grounded a ball to SS Karexon Sanchez to score Fry from third base, and everyone ended up being safe, with James heading to third, on a fielding error committed by Sanchez. Bolden brought in James with an RBI fielder's choice, which retired Paisano at second base. With two away and Bolden on at first, 1B Erik Morrison crushed a pitch to straight away center field that sailed over the wall for a two-run homer, making it 6-2. 3B Matt West followed the bomb with a single to further extend the inning and advanced to third on a single by Hogan. 2B Mike Hollander then hit a grounder to third that 3B Adam Abraham failed to field cleanly, enabling West to score and putting the Crawdads ahead, 7-2.
Perez, who tossed five innings and allowed only two unearned runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts, was relieved on the mound by RHP Cody Eppley to start the sixth inning. Eppley tossed a pair of scoreless innings before giving way to LHP Yoon-Hee Nam to begin the eighth. Nam allowed only one hit in his two innings of work, striking out five of the seven batters he faced to close the 7-2 victory for the Crawdads. Perez picked up the win for Hickory, while RHP Kaimi Mead (1-2), who allowed five runs (one earned) on on five hits in 3.2 innings in relief, was tagged with loss.
