Hickory Crawdads News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - The Hickory Crawdads blew away the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 11-4, before 4,744 fans at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro on Friday night. With the win, the 'Dads take over sole possession of first place in the second half standings, and are 4-1 on the current nine-game road trip.
The 'Dads (7-2, 43-35) jumped in front right away with a pair of runs against RHP Scott Lyman (L, 1-1) in the top of the first inning. With one away, 1B Trever Adams swung his way into scoring position with a double, and then quickly came home on an RBI single by 3B Drew Robinson. An error on CF Brent Keys while scooping the single allowed Robinson to take second base on the play, before he advanced to third on a wild pitch. After LF Alejandro Selen worked a walk, CF Chris Grayson bounced an RBI grounder to plate Robinson for the 2-0 lead.
Hickory tacked on two more runs with one apiece in the second and third frames. RF Jordan Akins knocked a one-out double to right-center field in the second and moved to third on a base hit by 2B Nick Urbanus. An RBI fielder's choice by SS Luis Sardinas brought in Akins from third, before the 'Dads added another run in the fourth. With two outs in the inning, Selen and Grayson belted back-to-back doubles, making it 4-0.
After LHP Will Lamb (W, 1-6) kept the Grasshoppers (4-5, 50-29) scoreless through the first three innings, Greensboro got on the board in the bottom of the third. With two on and no outs, 2B Austin Barnes laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. LF Aaron Senne plated DH Rand Smith from third, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
Greensboro continued chipping away with a two-run home run by Senne in the bottom of the fifth. However, Lamb got out of the inning with the Crawdads still in the lead, 4-3, and Hickory's bats stretched the lead back out right away.
Grayson led off the top of the sixth inning by working a walk, before swiping second base while forcing an errant throw from C Wilfredo Gimenez, enabling Grayson to end up at third base. With one away, C Kellin Deglan promptly brought in Grayson with an RBI single up the middle, making it 5-3. Deglan then stole second base, before taking third base on a single by Urbanus. Sardinas plated Deglan with an RBI double off the right-center field wall, followed by a two-run single from Adams, giving the Crawdads the 8-3 advantage.
The Crawdads kept swinging away with three more runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Urbanus doubled his way on in the eighth, advancing around to third on a pair of walks before racing in on a wild pitch to make it 9-3. Consecutive singles by DH Jhonny Gomez and Deglan then started the ninth inning, with Akins also reaching on an error to load the bases with no outs. RBI ground outs from Urbanus and Sardinas plated both runners, stretching the lead to 11-3.
Greensboro scored one in the bottom of the ninth on a solo homer by 2B Austin Barnes, but RHP Daniel Lopez navigated through the inning with no further damage being done, closing the 11-4 win for Hickory.
