Rome, GA - The Rome Braves defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 11-9 Friday night at State Mutual Stadium in front of 2,609 fans. Rome was down 6-0 in the fifth and bounced back for their seventh win against two losses in the second half of play.
The Intimidators attacked early scoring four runs in the first. Keenyn Walker and Ross Wilson had singles to start the game. Kevan Smith then doubled that scored both Walker and Wilson. Smith later scored on a sacrifice fly by Rangel Ravelo. Grant Buckner would then walk and after a Leighton Pangilinan single and a Joe DePinto single he would cross the plate for the fourth run.
Kannapolis scored one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings and it wasn't until the fifth when the Braves would crack the scoreboard with three runs. Tony Mueller and Kyle Kubitza opened the frame with back to back singles. After two outs, Will Skinner singled to plate Mueller. William Beckwith would then smack a two RBI double scoring Kubtiza and Skinner making it a 6-3 game. Kannapolis added a run in the sixth on an RBI double by Keenyn Walker to extend their lead to 7-3.
The Braves made it a 7-6 game in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two RBI triple by Elmer Reyes and a sacrifice fly RBI by Mueller. Kannapolis got another run in the seventh. Mark Haddow tripled and scored on Buckner groundout for the 8-6 advantage. Rome jumped ahead in the bottom half with five runs. Brandon Drury and Mueller each had two RBI singles in the inning. Mueller later crossed the plate on a throwing error to give Rome an 11-8 lead. The Intimidators managed a run in the eighth but the Rome bullpen shut them down for the remainder of the game for the 11-9 win.
Ian Thomas (2-0), in relief of starter David Filak, got the victory. Thomas pitched two innings allowing four hits, two runs and three strikeouts with David Peterson (1) earning his first save of the season. Steve Brase (3-4) received the loss for the Intimidators.
