Edinburg Roadrunners News Release
EDINBURG, Texas- Robert Matlock came up big Thursday night as he hit a three-run inside-the-park home run to propel the Edinburg Coyotes to a 3-1 win over the Harlingen WhiteWings at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. It was the first inside-the-park home run of the season for the Coyotes. Coyotes are now three games behind the Laredo Broncos after they lost to the Alexandria Aces. Besides the clutch hit from Matlock, the Coyotes were steered to victory from their ace Eric Montoya who went seven stout innings giving up only one run on three hits while striking out 10. Montoya picked up his seventh victory of the season while WhiteWings' pitcher Alex Gett picked up his seventh loss of the season. Gett pitched a great game as well going 6 2/3 innings giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out nine. Luke Prihoda picked up his second save after closing out the game. Matlock led the only offensive rally for the Coyotes as he went 1-for-4 with three RBIs for the night off the clutch hit to win the game.
After four scoreless innings, the WhiteWings were able to get their offense going after Joel Gonzalez disrupted Montoya's perfect game as he singled to center field. The hit was Gonzalez's second time in three games that he has broken up a no-hitter from a pitcher. Two batters later, Trey Hendricks picked up his first RBI of the season after he doubled to center field bringing in Gonzalez from first and giving the WhiteWings a 1-0 lead.
The Coyotes answered in the bottom of the seventh after Mayobanex Santana singled to left field to lead off the inning. Amado German then hit a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Santana over to second. Alex Entrekin walked and Angelo Fermin flew out to center advancing Santana over to third. Matlock then hit a clutch inside-the-park home run to give the Coyotes a 3-1 lead.
Relievers Bryan Heaston and Prihoda pitched a solid performance not allowing a single hit in the eighth and ninth innings. The Coyotes will take on the WhiteWings tomorrow night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium for Game 2 of the three-game series. First pitch is set for 7:05.
