San Angelo Colts News Release

AMARILLO, Texas - The three-day All-Star Break seemed to have no ill effect on the San Angelo Colts Thursday night as the Colts (34-21) won their sixth in a row, defeating the Amarillo Dillas 9-5 in the opener of a four-game series. The Colts have also won three straight over the Dillas (33-27), trailing in only one half-inning of the three games.

That half-inning was tonight when A.J. Johnson hit a two-run homer in the sixth to put the Dillas ahead 4-3. The Colts came right back in the top of the seventh though, scoring five runs to take an 8-4 advantage. Player-coach Joe Rhomberg, playing in his first game of the season, doubled to begin the inning. Charley Belew then tried to sacrifice Rhomberg over, dropping down a bunt on the left side of the mound. Amarillo starter Marcos Castillo (7-4) barehanded the bunt and threw to third in time, but Rhomberg was called safe when he slid in short of the bag, popped up, then lunged for the base with his right foot, all the while eluding the tag of Andrew Wong. Rhomberg then scored on a double by Tyrone Pendergrass, tying the game at 4-4 and moving Belew to third. After Bryan Frichter was retired, Jose Torres was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Aaron Cone, the next batter, made the Dillas pay, driving home two runs with a single to right field. Two batters later, Jason Landreth, just added to the roster yesterday and playing his first game back with the Colts after playing 21 games with San Angelo in 2003, hit a two-run double off the center field wall to make it 8-4.

Landreth and Cone were each 3-for-4 with a walk, and Cone drove in four runs while finishing a double shy of the cycle.

After the Colts took the lead in the seventh, San Angelo starter Brian Henschel (7-2) threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh and a scoreless eighth to finish an excellent night of work. Henschel allowed four runs, three earned, on 10 hits with five strikeouts and no walks, earning his seventh win in his last seven starts and tying him for the team lead in victories with Logan Williamson. After the Colts made it 9-4 with an RBI sac fly by Wyn Diggs in the top of the ninth, Mitch Lively allowed a run on three straight hits in the bottom of the ninth but then struck out the next three batters to end the game.

For the seventh straight game, San Angelo scored first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI triple by Cone and an RBI infield single by Andres Rodriguez. Amarillo plated two runs, one unearned, in the bottom of the first to even the game at 2-2. A pitchers' duel ensued from the second until the sixth as Henschel retired 10 in a row at one point. In the sixth, Cone launched a solo homer to right field, giving the Colts a 3-2 edge until Johnson went deep for the 15th time this season in the bottom of the sixth.

Dillas manager Brady Bogart and Castillo were ejected from the game after arguing with base umpire Dewey Larson and plate umpire Stacey Dunbar after Castillo was pulled from the game in the top of the seventh. Bogart had also come out to argue earlier in the inning when Rhomberg was called safe at third by Larson.

The Colts continue this four-game series in Amarillo with game two at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, July 18. The Colts return home on Thursday, July 24 to begin a 10-game, nine-day homestand, starting with a Miller Lite "Thirsty Thursday," when 16 oz. bottles of beer are just $2. Advertising, ticket, and group information are available by calling the box office at (325) 942-6587. All Colts games are broadcast live on "Cool 100" - KCLL 100.1 FM and online at the Colts' official website, www.sanangelocolts.com, which is updated daily with the latest team news.
