Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning in a 1-1 game, Austin Cousino stepped into the batter's box with Wayne Taylor on third base. The center fielder hit Luke Bard's (L, 7-1) first pitch on a line into center field, as he provided the Clinton LumberKings (13-40, 39-83) with their eighth walk-off win of the season and first vs. the Cedar Rapids Kernels (29-24, 70-53). Taylor led off the bottom of the ninth with a triple into the gap in right-center field that deflected off of the glove of right fielder Max Murphy. With the infield and outfield drawn in, Bard struck out Arby Fields who looked at a fastball for a called third strike, while Brock Hebert swung through a high fastball for the second strikeout of the inning. With the infield and outfield at normal depth with two outs, Cousino singled back up the middle and ended the game. Cousino has provided the game-winning RBI in each of Clinton's last three walk-off wins. Cedar Rapids got the scoring started vs. Lukas Schiraldi (ND) in the third inning. Sean Miller began the frame with a double, while a one-out passed ball moved him to third base. As Nick Gordon swung through strike three on a pitch in the dirt, the ball got passed Taylor behind the plate, as Gordon was safe at first and Miller scored from third. Cedar Rapids led 1-0, though the lead lasted just one inning. In the fourth, Clinton plated its first run in part to the team's first hit of the game. Hebert led off the inning vs. Randy Rosario (ND) with a double, moved to third base on a fly out by Cousino, then scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Gianfranco Wawoe, which tied the game at one. Rosario faced just one over the minimum through seven two-hit innings, as the lefty struck out eight and walked only one. After Schiraldi went just five innings, Kody Kerski pitched three shutout frames, while Pat Peterson (W, 6-6) pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Schiraldi struck out a season high eight but walked four, his fifth straight start with at least three walks. The righty allowed just three hits and one run. Hebert, Cousino, Taylor, and Burt Reynolds provided the only hits for Clinton, as the LumberKings recorded just four hits for the second night in a row. Cedar Rapids went 1-11 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base in the loss, while Clinton left just one runner on base, Cousino in the ninth.
