Daytona Beach, FL - Behind a career night from LHP Amir Garrett (W, 2-4), the Tortugas (30-19) held off the Clearwater Threshers (24-25) with a 4-2 win on Saturday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Garrett struck out a career-high 12 batters in a career-high seven innings, issuing no walks and allowing six hits. Two unearned runs came across against Garrett in the fifth inning. He gave way to LHP Joel Bender (H, 4), who recorded five consecutive outs, and El'Hajj Muhammad (S, 4) who induced a game-ending flight.
Daytona took a first inning lead on an RBI single from DH Sebastian Elizalde, his 30th of the season. They doubled their lead on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by C Chad Wallach, who broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the fifth. It proved to be the game-winning hit.
The Tortugas would add an insurance run in the eighth inning. Elizalde led off with a double to right, moved to third on a Wallach lineout, and scored on a sac fly from 1B Robert Ramirez.
Colin Kleven (L, 4-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts in five innings. Miguel Nunez retired the first six hitters he faced before surrendering the run in the ninth inning, just the second earned run he's allowed out of the bullpen in 11 innings this year.
Elizalde and CF Junior Arias produced the two Tortuga multi-hit games.
With a five-game lead in the FSL North Division (21 games remaining in the first half), Daytona will send LHP Nick Routt to the mound for his first start of the season on Sunday night for Game 2 against the Threshers.
