Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

JUPITER, FL - With costumes adorning Roger Dean Stadium, the Cardinals Halfway to Halloween promotion coincided with the team's first win against the Stone Crabs in 2015. In a rare slugfest, Charlotte watched three fifth-inning errors lead to four unearned runs as the teams traded barbs in the first few innings. Later in the ninth, the Stone Crabs came up just short and three runs in the final frame wasn't enough as Palm Beach escaped with a 9-7 win. The loss marks the first time all season the `Crabs have dropped three straight.

It was supposed to be a pitcher's duel between Buddy Borden and Alex Reyes, but neither righthander looked particularly sharp. The `Cards scored two runs in the first after a leadoff single from C.J. McElroy Jr. and a double from Casey Turgeon. Another single by Mason Katz put runners at the corners for Luke Voit, whose 6-4-3 double play ball brought in another run to make it 2-0.

After stranding a runner at third base in each of the first two innings, Reyes finally caved against the visitors in the third. A double by Pat Blair and an opposite field single into left by Kean Wong put the tying runs at the corners with no outs. Reyes then threw a wild pitch, but Katz got up quickly and fed the flamethrower at the plate to apply the tag on Blair for the first out. Willy Adames went down swinging before Jake Bauers drew a walk, allowing Mike Marjama to pull a run scoring single into left. Granden Goetzman's second single loaded the bases, but Armando Araiza popped out to third to retire the side.

Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, Yoel Araujo and Wong cracked singles off Cardinals reliever Cody Schumacher. Adames knocked his 12th double for his second hit to get a run back and make it 3-2 with two outs. Bauers worked the count level at 2-2 before lining a two-run single into left for a 4-3 lead, but the first baseman was thrown out trying to get to second for the final out.

McElroy's single off Borden in the bottom half scored Jimmy Bosco to retie the game at four apiece. Things quickly went south in the fifth when Adames made a throwing error from short on a ball hit off the bat of Cardinals right fielder Colin Radack. A single by Brett Wiley brought up Juan Herrera for the turning point of the night. He bounced a ball off Borden that rolled to Wong at second for a possible inning-ending double play. Unfortunately, Adames dropped the feed at second and the Cards had them loaded with just one out. Bosco's sacrifice fly to center broke the tie and a Robelys Reyes single past the shallow infield was good for a 6-4 lead. McElroy's bouncer to first glanced off Bauers for the third error of the inning and another run for Palm Beach. Turgeon then continued his perfect night with an RBI single to double the lead at 8-4.

Cardinals lefthander Tyler Melling came in to get the final three outs with a 9-4 lead in the ninth. Araujo opened the inning with a hard double into the left center field gap before Blair singled him home with a flair into center. Wong struck out for the third time and Adames hit his second double for his fifth three-hit game. Bauers then looped a shot into left for two more runs batted in and his third base hit, marking the first four-RBI game for a Stone Crab this season. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol then made the wise move and went to his bullpen, and Kevin Herget earned his first save, needing just four pitches to retire Marjama and Goetzman and give the Cardinals a 9-7 win.

The series continues on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM when lefthanders Chris Kirsch (3-2, 2.82 ERA) and Rob Kaminsky (3-3, 3.14 ERA) square off in the middle game of three. You can follow all the action by listening to the game on www.stonecrabsbaseball.com via TuneIn Radio, or tuning into 91.7 FM-WVIJ in the Port Charlotte area.
