Prince George Cougars News Release
Prince George, B.C. - Western Hockey League Commissioner Ron Robison announced today, on behalf of the WHL Board of Governors, that Lucille McClung and Carol Carlson - Core Volunteer Supervisors for the Prince George Cougars - have been named the latest recipients of the WHL Distinguished Service Award for the 2023-24 WHL season.
The WHL Distinguished Service Award, which was introduced by the WHL in 2004, is presented annually to the individuals who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes on behalf of WHL franchises and in doing so have made an extraordinary contribution at the Club and League levels over an extended period. The WHL will present Distinguished Service Awards annually to an individual from both the WHL Western and Eastern Conferences.
McClung and Carlson were honoured as co-recipients by Commissioner Robison in Prince George during a special ceremony prior to Monday's game between the Cougars and Everett Silvertips.
"For decades, Lucille and Carol have been unsung heroes for the Prince George Cougars, ensuring fans have a positive and safe experience during Cougars games," commented WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. "Volunteers are vital to the success of all WHL Clubs, and Lucille and Carol have contributed in exemplary and outstanding fashion for the Cougars. Their efforts over many years make them both most deserving recipients of the WHL Distinguished Service Award."
McClung has been volunteering with the Cougars for more than 25 years, while Carlson has been volunteering for more than 15 years.
"The Prince George Cougars are extremely appreciative of the years of dedicated service from both Lucille and Carol," said Parker Hennebury, Manager of Game Operations for the Cougars. "We cannot imagine more deserving recipients of the Distinguished Service Award."
McClung and Carlson work closely with Hennebury, City of Prince George liaisons, and Taylor Dakers (Prince George Cougars Director of Business) to deliver a great fan experience for all in attendance.
The dynamic duo of McClung and Carlson arrive hours prior to the opening of doors to ensure all Core Volunteers are provided with a detailed briefing each game night. From there, they check in with the game night crew throughout and provide assistance where needed.
Away from the rink, both McClung and Carlson work tirelessly in the community to recruit prospective volunteers. They also log additional volunteer hours each summer to ensure the Prince George Cougars Hospital Charity Golf Tournament is a success.
