Cougars Take 2-0 Series Lead with 7-4 Win Over Chiefs

PRINCE GEORGE, BC - The Prince George Cougars took a 2 games to none lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference Quarter-Final after defeating the Spokane Chiefs 7-4, on Saturday at the CN Centre.

15 different Cougars found the scoresheet, led by Riley Heidt who accumulated three assists. Joshua Ravensbergen picked up his second win of the playoffs, making 26 saves on 30 shots.

GOALS:

1st Period

1-0 Cougars at 9:31 - Keaton Dowhaniuk (2), assisted by Matteo Danis and Borya Valis // Borya Valis attempted to wrap the puck around the net and towards the goal, but it instead found the stick of Keaton Dowhaniuk who fired a shot from the left circle and solved Dawson Cowan to make it 1-0.

2nd PERIOD

2-0 Cougars at 2:22 - Oren Shtrom (1), assisted by Matteo Danis // A 2 on 0 developed off a Chief turnover, and Oren Shtrom attempted to make a pass to Danis in the offensive zone that bounced off the Chief defender and past Cowan to make it 2-0.

3-0 Cougars at 8:35 - Ondrej Becher (2) (PP), assisted by Hudson Thornton and Ondrej Becher // On a PG power-play, Hudson Thornton got the puck to Ondrej Becher who wired a one timer off the back bar that went in and out of the net in milliseconds to extend the PG lead.

4-0 Cougars at 14:24- Aiden Foster (1), assisted by Jett Lajoie and Nicholas McLennan // The Cougars fourth line went to work, and it resulted in a one-timer from Aiden Foster inside the left circle off a terrific pass from Lajoie at the goal line to make it 4-0.

5-0 Cougars at 15:25 - Carlin Dezainde (1), assisted by Koehn Ziemmer and Riley Heidt // Shortly after the Foster tally, the Cougars developed another odd-man rush and Carlin Dezainde hit a one-timer from the right circle by Cowan to add to the lead.

6-0 Cougars at 15:37 - Viliam Kmec (1), assisted by Koehn Ziemmer and Riley Heidt // 12 seconds later, another odd-man rush occurred for the Cougars, and it was started again by Riley Heidt and Koehn Ziemmer who ended up spotting Viliam Kmec who fired in his first of the playoffs. This ended the night for Cowan. Cooper Michaluk came into finish the contest.

3rd Period

6-1 Cougars at 0:58- Owen Martin (1), assisted by Will McIsaac and Ben Bonni// A shot from Will McIsaac was redirected in tight and solved Josh Ravensbergen to get the Chiefs on the board.

6-2 Cougars at 8:34 - Hayden Paupanekis (1), assisted by Owen Martin and Shea Van Olm // The Chiefs added another, this time on the power play. An Owen Martin shot inside the blue line was redirected in by 6'3 forward Hayden Paupanekis to make it 6-2.

6-3 Cougars at 14:18 - Layton Feist (1). Assisted by Brayden Crampton // Spokane cut the lead in half when Layton Feist carried the puck to the left circle and snuck it through the legs of Josh Ravensbergen to make it 6-3.

6-4 Cougars at 18:15 - Layton Feist (2) assisted by Berkly Catton and Chase Harrington // With the Spokane net empty, they cut the lead to two, courtesy of a point shot from Feist that found its way by Ravensbergen.

7-4 Cougars at 19:26 - Terik Parascak (4) (EN), assisted by Riley Heidt and Carlin Dezainde // Riley Heidt was able to grab the puck at centre ice, carry the puck into the attacking zone, and spotted Parascak who deposited the frozen disc into the empty net to secure a 7-4 win for Prince George.
