Chiefs Battle Back Late, Fall 7-4 in Game 2 vs Cougars

Spokane Chiefs News Release

Prince George, B.C. - The Spokane Chiefs dug themselves into a deep hole that even a strong, four-goal third period couldn't get them out of in their 7-4 loss to the Prince George Cougars Saturday night.

The Cougars were the only ones on the scoresheet through the first two periods of the game, scoring six-straight the 15:37 mark of the second frame. It was a close battle in the first period, with Keaton Dowhaniuk scoring the only goal of the frame at 9:31.

But Prince George blew the game open in the second, highlighted by three goals in just over a minute in the back half of the period - Aiden Foster at 14:24, Carlin Dezainde at 15:25 and Viliam Kmec at 15:37 - to put the Cougars in total control at 6-0.

After the sixth goal, Cooper Michaluk swapped in for Dawson Cowan and played the remainder of the game, allowing just one more Prince George goal at 19:26 in the third (Parascak).

Spokane finally showed signs of life 58 seconds into the third period, when Owen Martin scored his first career WHL playoff goal with help from Will McIsaac and Ben Bonni.

At 8:34, Martin fired another puck on net and it was deflected out front by Hayden Paupanekis into the twine to make it a 6-2 game. Shea Van Olm also logged an assist on the power play goal.

Defenseman Layton Feist made things interesting with back-to-back goals at 14:18 and 18:50 to put the Chiefs within two. But that's as close as they'd get, as the dwindling clock wasn't on their side.

The Chiefs will return home for Game Three against the Cougars on Tuesday, as well as Game Four on Wednesday. If necessary, a Game Five will also be played at Spokane Arena on Friday, April 5.
