Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Illinois - The Kane County Cougars (7-4) split a doubleheader with the Peoria Chiefs (4-6) on Saturday afternoon, winning game one, 9-3, and dropping game two, 1-0. With the split, the Cougars earned a series win in the three-game set.
L.T. Tolbert had his most productive game in a Cougar uniform in the first tilt. In the first inning, he came to the plate with the bases loaded and launched his first home run of the season to put the Cougars in front 4-0. Peoria trimmed the lead to 4-1 in the second, but Tolbert's spot came up in the third with two runners on. The infielder blasted a pitch over the right-center field fence for his second homer of the day to pace the Cougars to a 7-1 advantage.
The long ball was the theme in game one. The Cougars added on with back-to-back solo homers from Jose Herrera and Jorge Perez in the fourth. Lars Nootbaar went deep, a two-run shot for the Chiefs in the sixth.
Justin Vernia (2-0) earned the game one win, tossing 5.2 innings of two-run ball, scattering six hits with no walks. Cole Aker (0-1) suffered the loss. He was charged with all nine Cougar runs.
Pitching dominated the second game. Erin Baldwin made a spot start for the Cougars and collected four scoreless innings in a no-decision. Wesley Rodriguez came out of the bullpen to hold Peoria scoreless in the fifth and sixth. Meanwhile, Chiefs starter Diego Cordero matched the zeroes thrown up by Baldwin and Rodriguez. Thanks to Nolan Gorman's solo homer in the top of the seventh off Cougar reliever Chester Pimentel (1-1), Cordero (1-1) earned the win after 6.2 innings of shutout ball.
The Cougars have the day off Sunday before welcoming the Burlington Bees to Northwestern Medicine Field for the start of a three-game series on Monday night. The game one pitching matchup features Cougars' right-hander Jackson Goddard (1-0, 1.13). Burlington has yet to announce its starter. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Fans can run the bases postgame, presented by Sonic Drive-In. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or order online on kccougars.com.
