Kane County Cougars News Release
APPLETON, Wis.- The Cougars (35-20, 80-45) pitching staff did not allow a run in the final 18 innings of a three-game series sweep over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (29-26, 65-59). A double-header shutout sweep of 9-0 and 3-0 at Fox Cities handed the Cougars their seventh straight win.
The seventh innings of both games were crucial frames for both teams as the Cougars scored nine total runs in the final inning of each game.
In the first game, the Cougars sent 12 batters to the plate in the seventh for a seven-run frame against the two different pitchers. After Jeffrey Baez's first solo home run to begin the offensive inning, Jacob Rogers, Jeimer Candelario and Daniel Lockhart all had run-scoring knocks. Victor Caratini connected on a two-run single while celebrating his 21st birthday.
Daury Torrez earned his 11th win with five innings of shutout baseball and only allowing one hit. The Cougars' defense pitched in with solid plays coming from Yasiel Balaguert, Baez, Penalver and Torrez. David Garner added two scoreless frames to seal the victory.
Game two's second inning looked promising for the Cougars as they loaded the bases with nobody out, but only cashed in one run as Baez grounded into a double play. Baez's twin killing was the only difference for a while as Ben Wells (2-0) stranded five base runners through the first five frames.
Baez supplied another insurance run as he homered again off of starter Clint Terry (3-3) to knock him out of the ballgame. Carlos Penalver singled off of reliever Chris Razo and moved to third base on a stolen base and throwing error from Wisconsin's catcher. A Razo throwing error allowed Penlaver to score for a 3-0 Cougars' lead in the seventh.
Francisco Carrillo walked two batters to bring the tying run to the plate, but struck out the side for his third save of the season.
The Cougars now head back to Geneva for a six-game home stand. Monday begins a series against the Burlington Bees with Harrison Cooney (8-7, 2.73) throwing against the Cougars' Jen-Ho Tseng (6-1, 2.52). First pitch from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark is at 6:30 p.m. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com.
