Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Cincinnati Reds all-star Brandon Phillips delivered a single and double for the Dayton Dragons but it was not enough to overcome a 16-hit attack for the Bowling Green Hot Rods as they avoided a sweep of a three-game series and defeated the Dragons 10-4 on Sunday afternoon. A crowd of 8,780 attended the game at Fifth Third Field.
Phillips became the 29th Reds player to complete an injury rehabilitation assignment for the Dragons and went 2 for 3, playing seven innings at second base. Phillips was hit by a pitch (left forearm) in his first plate appearance before lining a single to right, drilling a double off the left field fence, and striking out looking to complete his day.
The Dragons led the East Division Second Half wildcard race by one game over Great Lakes when the day began. As of this posting, Great Lakes and West Michigan were tied 5-5 in the 10th inning. There are 15 games to play.
Douglas Duran went 4 for 4 and Oscar Hernandez belted a two-run home run to lead the attack for Bowling Green. The Hot Rods jumped out to an early 6-0 over lead over the first two innings and the Dragons were never able to cut the deficit to less than five runs over the rest of the game.
Dragons starting pitcher Nick Howard (1-1) suffered the loss. He worked five innings, allowing eight hits and six runs with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Dragons collected eight hits on the day. Jon Matthews went 3 for 4 with an RBI along with Phillips' two-hit day. Alex Blandino was 0 for 3 with two walks as his 11-game hitting streak came to an end.
The Dragons (27-28) travel to South Bend, Indiana to begin a six-game road trip against the South Bend Silver Hawks (31-24) on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Amir Garrett (7-6, 3.22) will start for the Dragons.
The next home game for the Dragons is Sunday, August 24 at 4:00 p.m. vs. the Great Lakes Loons.
All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.
