
South Bend closes out Lansing, 3-2

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Lansing Lugnuts (24-31, 56-68) fell to the South Bend Silver Hawks (31-24, 71-53), 3-2, in the rubber match of a three-game set on Sunday afternoon at Four Winds Field.
The Silver Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run by Andrew Velazquez against Lansing starter Starlyn Suriel (Loss, 1-3). A second run scored on an RBI infield single by Velazquez in the second.
South Bend starting pitcher Sean Furney (Win, 8-6) allowed just one run on five hits in his six innings.
The Lugnuts cut the deficit to one with a solo home run by designated hitter David Harris in the sixth, but an RBI triple by D.J. Bowman extended the advantage back to two for South Bend.
Lansing right fielder Derrick Loveless crushed a solo home run off of the right-field scoreboard in the eighth to close the deficit back to one, but closer Silvino Bracho (Save, 24) worked a perfect ninth to close out the series.
The Lugnuts begin a three-game series on the road against the West Michigan Whitecaps on Monday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. Lefty Brent Powers (4-4, 4.56) will be on the mound for the Lugnuts, with right-hander Jonathon Crawford (6-3, 3.12) pitching for the Whitecaps.
The Lugnuts return to Cooley Law School Stadium on a Labatt Thirsty Thursday, August 21st, with $2 beers, $2 sodas, craft beer specials and a postgame concert featuring Starfarm. Gametime against the South Bend Silver Hawks is 7:05 p.m.
