Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Dayton, Ohio - Facing a first-round starter and a Major League second baseman, the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) charged out to a 6-0 lead after just two innings and defeated the Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds) on Sunday, 10-4. Cincinnati's Brandon Phillips played in his final rehab game, recording two hits including a double. Bowling Green now returns home for an important six-game homestand beginning Monday night.

Two-out rallies led to the early success for the Hot Rods. In the top of the first, Alexander Simon singled up the middle to keep the inning alive. Oscar Hernandez then blasted his ninth home run of the season off Reds first-rounder Nick Howard, giving Bowling Green the 2-0 lead.

It went from bad to worse for Howard, as four runs crossed in the second. Again it was with two outs, as Spencer Edwards drew a walk to keep the inning going. The Hot Rods would then record five consecutive singles, including run-scoring hits from Willy Adames, Pat Blair, Simon, and Hernandez. The big inning swelled the Hot Rods lead to 6-0.

Dayton would get on the board when a double play forced home a run in the fourth, but Bowling Green added three runs in the sixth. James Harris began the frame with a single that extended his hitting streak to nine games. Following a hit by Elias Torres, Edwards delivered a single to send home Harris. An error allowed Edwards to move to second base and Torres to third, and Douglas Duran delivered a two-run single up the middle to push the lead back to 9-1.

The Dragons would not go away quietly, but their rally in the seventh fell short despite cutting the deficit to 9-4. The Hot Rods would score an insurance run in the eighth when Duran singled home Edwards after he had tripled to left-center field. Duran finished the game with four hits, tying a franchise record and a Bowling Green season-high.

Isaac Gil (1-1) tied a personal-best with five innings pitched. He struck out four, and allowed just one run. Stone Speer and D.J. Slaton worked the final four innings to seal the win.

Howard (1-1) settled down after the first two innings, but he picked up his first loss as a professional. He allowed six runs on eight hits over five innings.

The Hot Rods finished the road trip 3-3, and now open up a pivotal six-game homestand on Monday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT, as the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Indians) enter Bowling Green Ballpark. The Captains currently lead the playoff chase for the Midwest League's Eastern Division. Hot dogs and Pepsi products will be just one dollar on Monday night, and gates open up at 6 p.m. CT.
