Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - Sam Smith (3-1) completely dominated the Kane County Cougars (24-10) on Thursday night, hurling his second straight complete game shutout, leading South Bend (10-21) to a 3-0 victory. Smith scattered four hits, walked one, and fanned four. He retired the final 11 batters of the game, and is scoreless in 16 innings pitched during the month of May.
Joe Blanton (2-4) suffered the loss for Kane County. Blanton allowed only five hits and two runs (one earned) in six innings. Last week's pitcher of the week, Blanton, issued two walks and fanned five.
The only threat for the Cougars came in the third inning. Brian Stavisky led off the inning with a single. After Kirk Nordness flied out to center field, Marcus McBeth singled in his first Cougars at bat, putting runners at first and third. Smith was able to bear down and retire Francis Gomez and John McCurdy to end the inning.
South Bend opened up the scoring with a single run in the third inning. Neb Brown dropped a bunt single to plate home Jerry Gil, who opened the inning with a single, and moved to third on a single by Kervin Jacabo. The inning ended when Francis Gomez made a terrific diving stop to rob Jeff Stanek with the bases loaded.
In the fifth inning, the Silver Hawks made it 2-0 with a run off Blanton. Gil reached on an error by shortstop, John McCurdy to begin the inning. Gil then stole second, was singled to left field, and scored on Jarred Ball's RBI single.
Edwardo Sierra entered the game in the eighth inning, and allowed the final run of the night for the Silver Hawks. Sean Luellwitz pulled a two out RBI double to score Jon-Mark Sprowl.
The Cougars open up a four-game series tomorrow night in Fort Wayne to battle the Wizards; game time is 6:00 PM. Shane Komine RHP (4-0, 2.08) makes his seventh start of the season for the Cougars; David Pauley RHP (3-2, 2.70) goes to the hill for the Wizards.
