Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa â The Greater Cedar Rapids Open golf tournament announced Thursday that it would be a part of the three tournament series that will comprise the Iowa Grand Slam of Golf.
The announcement was made at the New Veterans Memorial Stadium before the Kernels' noon game against the Dayton Dragons.
The Greater Cedar Rapids Open presented by Outback Steakhouse for the benefit of the Boys and Girls Club of Cedar Rapids will be the final leg of the Iowa Grand Slam of Golf, which also includes the Iowa Open and Waterloo Open.
The tournaments will be held on consecutive weekends in July. The Iowa Open will be July 11-13 and the Waterloo Open July 17-19. Both tournaments will be played at Waterloo's Gates and Irv Warren golf courses. The Greater Cedar Rapids Open will be held July 23-27 and will be played at Hunters Ridge in Marion and Gardner golf course in Cedar Rapids. All three tournaments are pro-ams.
Warren Transport of Waterloo will pay a $25,000 bonus if a golfer wins two of the three tournaments.
"This is huge,'' said Jim Petersen, co-chairman of the GCRO. "It's not only about our golf tournaments; it's about our two communities. There are a lot of good things going between our two communities. We thought this would be a great platform to introduce something positive for our two communities.''
Cedar Rapids Mayor Paul Pate, Marion Mayor Pro-Tem Julie Speral, Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Commissioner Wade Wagner and Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce President were among the dignitaries present for the announcement.
