Dayton Dragons News Release

The Dayton Dragons (16-17) failed to score in the first inning for the first time against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (17-15) and for the first time in the four game series fell to the Kernels, dropping a 5-1 decision.

Cedar Rapids got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning off Dragons starter Camilo Vazquez (ND). Jared Abruzzo led off the inning with a double into left field and was moved to third on a bloop single by David Gates. With runners at first and third and one down, Matt Brown grounded a pitch down to third. Kernel Manager Todd Claus started Gates in motion with the pitch and that prevented the inning ending double play. Brown's 5-4-3 ground out got home the first run of the game and CR led 1-0.

The Dragons wasted little time tying the ball game at 1-1. Miguel Perez reached on an error by Kernels starter Kevin Jepsen (ND). Perez moved into scoring position with a stolen base and advanced to third on a Domonique Lewis ground out. With Perez at third and one down, Kevin Howard grounded out on the right side scoring Perez and the score was tied.

Both pitcher's continued to battle all afternoon long and the game remained a 1-1 deadlock until the bottom of the seventh. Jake Mathis came on with two on and two out as a pinch hitter for Justin Hancock and picked up a RBI single to center off Kyle Lucas (L, 1-1) that scored Matt Brown and Cedar Rapids had the 2-1 lead.

Jepsen lasted 7.0 innings and held the Dragons to a lone hit, before giving way to Ozzie Lugo (S, 1) in the eighth. Lugo picked up the save with two scoreless innings of baseball to preserve the win for the Kernels, who split the series with the Dragons two games apiece.

The Dragons continue eight day, eight game road trip with a four game series against the Clinton Lumber Kings at Alliant Energy Field beginning Friday night at 8 PM. 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live with the pre game show beginning at 7:30 PM. LHP Juan Frias (2-2, 1.80 ERA) will get the start for the Dragons. RHP Nick Massett (0-1, 9.78 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Lumber Kings.
