Cougars rally back to beat the Chiefs, 5-2

Geneva, IL - The magic continued at Elfstrom Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars (21-8) rallied back to defeat the Peoria Chiefs (16-12), 5-2. Edwardo Sierra (1-0) struck out the only batter he faced in the eighth inning, to earn his first win of the season. Jonathan Estes (1-1) suffered the loss for the Chiefs, getting tagged for three runs on four hits, and didn't retire a batter.

Jeff Muessig escaped a two-out rally by the Chiefs in the ninth inning, to earn his fifth save of the season. Peoria loaded the bases against Muessig after two outs, but Matt Lemanczyk hit into a fielder's choice to end the game.

With the Cougars trailing 2-0 in the sixth inning, they scored two unearned runs against Chiefs' starter, Donavan Graves. J.P. Schmidt started the excitement by reaching on a third baseman's error. Nick Rogers followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Francis Gomez and John McCurdy provided RBI's to tie the game.

Rogers came through with the game-winning hit in the eighth inning. He squared to sacrifice, pulled it back, and lined and RBI single, giving the Cougars the lead for good, 3-2. Gomez and John Baker followed with RBI's to cap off the scoring.

The Chiefs jumped on the board early, plating a first inning run against Shane Komine. Matt Lemanczyk started the rally with an infield single, Travis Hanson followed with a single, and Tyler Parker delivered a sacrifice fly to score Lemanczyk.

In the third inning, Peoria continued their clutch situational hitting. Parker drove in his second run of the game, with a two-out RBI single, scoring Lemanczyk. The Chiefs have 51 RBI's with two outs and runners in scoring position.

The Cougars and the Chiefs wrap up their series on Sunday afternoon with a 2:00 PM start from Elfstrom Stadium. Bill Murphy LHP (2-2, 1.97) makes his sixth start of the season for Kane County. Andy Cavazos RHP (2-1, 4.28) will make the start for Peoria Chiefs.
