BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Rudy Guillen slugged a $475 home run and Jose Garcia pitched a complete game to power the Battle Creek Yankees past the visiting Cedar Rapids Kernels 11-2 Saturday night in a Midwest League baseball game at C.O. Brown Stadium. The two teams end a four-game series with a game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Guillen hit a two-run homer in the fourth â¹ the designated Old Navy Home Run Jackpot inning in a season-long promotion. The jackpot started at $25 and increased by $25 each game there was no home run hit by a Battle Creek player in the fourth inning.
The Yankees pounded out 15 hits to back a solid performance by Jose Garcia. The right-hander struck out five and walked just one to improve his record to 3-1. Kernels starter Kevin Jepsen (5-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season.
Battle Creek took a 1-0 lead in the second as Guillen and Matt Carson singled, and Gabe Lopez walked, to load the bases. A walk to Willie Vasquez drove in the run. Guillen¹s homer made it 3-0.
After the Kernels scored once in the seventh, the Yankees scored twice in the bottom of the inning for a 5-1 lead. Battle Creek added six runs in the eighth on seven hits. Cedar Rapids pushed across a run in the ninth for the 11-2 final.
Guillen and Lopez had three hits each for the Yankees. Vasquez, Carson, Jayson Drobiak and Alexander Santa had two hits each.
The 11 runs were the most this season by the Yankees - topping the seven scored five previous times. The 15 hits were also a season-high - topping the 13 collected against Quad City on April 16.
