Geneva, Illinois - The Kane County Cougars (46-38, 11-4) pitching staff one-hit the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (39-44, 8-6) to earn a 3-0 win on Friday night at Northwestern Field to earn a split of a two-game series. Jose Herrera paced the Cougar offense with two RBI.
Starting pitchers Levi Kelly and Logan Gillaspie grinded out four scoreless innings aside to begin the night. For the Cougars, Kelly battled through a one-out single and stolen base in the first inning and a hit batter in the third. Gillaspie allowed base runners in each of the first four innings, but no runs came home.
Kelly separated himself in the pitcher's duel in the fifth. He fought through two walks to shut down the Timber Rattlers for the fifth consecutive frame. Gillaspie allowed his first runs of the night in the bottom of the fifth. Zac Almond doubled and Keshawn Lynch singled to begin the inning before Tra Holmes walked to load the bases with no one out. Alek Thomas stroked a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 1-0. Jose Herrera tacked on the second run with an RBI single.
Kelly breezed through the sixth to end his night with a third straight quality start. He allowed no runs, one hit, struck out four and walked two. Ryan Miller carried the baton in the seventh and eighth. The right-hander didn't surrender a run or a hit & also received an insurance run on offense on Jose Herrera's eighth inning RBI double. Kai-Wei Lin (4) pitched the ninth to earn the save. Logan Gillaspie (2-5) suffered the loss, allowing two runs over five innings.
