Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars pounded the Burlington Bees, 13-5, Monday afternoon in their home opener at Elfstrom Stadium, giving them a franchise-record 5-0 mark to start the 2008 season. Todd Johnson, who was a double shy of the cycle, and Greg Dowling each had four hits and combined for seven RBIs.

The Cougars made it a rout right away, scoring six first-inning runs against Bees starter Zach Peterson (0-1). Corey Brown singled in Jonathan Johnston, Dowling launched a two-run homer and Johnson belted a three-run shot as 10 players batted in the frame.

After Cougars starter Scott Mitchinson allowed one run in the second and another in the third, Johnson tripled home Michael Lissman in the bottom half and scored on a Johnston sacrifice fly, making it 8-2. Mitchinson left after four innings, gave up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits, walked three and struck out eight.

Justin Friend (2-0) notched the win with three relief innings, and Nick Walters posted a pair of scoreless frames to close it out. The Cougars' offense, which connected for 19 hits, put up four more runs in the sixth and one in the eighth to account for the 13-5 finish.

The Cougars (5-0), who surpassed the 4-0 start set by the 2004 team, play the Bees (2-3) again on Tuesday at noon CT. Scott Hodsdon will face Danny Gutierrez.
