Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs were shut out 8-0 by the visiting Beloit Snappers in the home opener in front of 2,311 fans at O'Brien Field Monday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 2-3 on the season and the 10-game homestand continues on Tuesday at 11:00 AM.

The Chiefs fell behind 1-0 in the third inning after Daniel Lehmann doubled to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Mark Dolenc moved Lehmann to third base and he scored on a ground ball hit by Joe Benson to shortstop Marwin Gonzalez. Gonzalez had a play at the plate, but his throw was low, allowing Lehmann to score. Cliff Andersen picked up the Chiefs' first hit of the game, a single up the middle in the fifth inning, off Snappers starter Brian Kirwan. However, Drew Rundle promptly hit into a 3-6-1 double play to end the inning.

Beloit added to their lead in the sixth inning off Chiefs reliever Blake Parker. Chris Parmelee connected on his third home run of the season, a solo shot to center. Parmelee now has three hits on the season, all solo home runs.

The Snappers put the game out of reach in the ninth inning due in part to miscues by the Chiefs defense. Reliever Steve Vento gave up a single to Garrett Olson to start the inning followed by a Benson base hit that moved Olson to third. Deibinson Romero reached on a swinging bunt that went five feet up the first base line, allowing Olson to score to make it 3-0. The Chiefs defense committed its sixth error of the game on an Ozzie Lewis groundball that Gonzalez threw in the dirt to first to make it 4-0. Benson added a RBI single to extend the lead to 6-0 and Steve Singleton got a two-run infield single to cap the scoring in the inning and make it 8-0 in favor of Beloit.

Ashwood took the loss in his first start of the season allowing one unearned run on two hits in 3 1/3 innings of work. Parker allowed a run on two hits in 2 2/3 innings of work, and Hung-Wen Chen pitched two scoreless innings of work in his O'Brien Field debut. Vento finished up in the ninth, giving up six runs, only one of which was earned.

Player of the Game - Cliff Andersen (RF) - Andersen picked up the first hit of the game for the Chiefs, and he finished the game 1-for-2 with an outfield assist and was hit by a pitch.
