Kane County Cougars News Release
Burlington, IA - The Kane County Cougars and Burlington Bees took 14 innings to decide Monday night's game at Community Field, as the Bees won, 2-1, on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 14th to walk off with a win for the second time in the series. The pitching duel featured only 11 hits between the two teams. The Cougars' lead over Peoria atop the Western Division is down to one game after the Chiefs' win versus Clinton.
The Bees first run came in the third against Cougars starter Jason Ray, who lasted six innings and allowed only three hits in the no-decision, which ends his personal five-start winning streak. He walked three and fanned three.
The Cougars' quiet offense broke through in the sixth against Bees starter Chris Nicoll. Justin Sellers led off with a bunt single and later took third on an error during a Mike Massaro bunt. Then Nick Blasi bounced into a double play that plated Sellers for the 1-1 affair.
The Cougars managed one hit and four base runners the rest of the way but were kept in the game by relief pitching and defense. Joe Piekarz and Steve Sharpe combined five scoreless relief innings, and outfielder Wes Long threw out Mario Lisson at the plate in the bottom of the ninth on a play that would have ended the game. Brad Kilby, who posted five strikeouts during his 2 1/3 innings, gave up a base hit to Lisson in the 14th, and the runner later scored on Jeff Gray's wild pitch for the 2-1 final.
Kilby (1-1) was hooked with the loss, and Chris Hayes (1-2) grabbed the win for Burlington. The series finale of the four-game series is Tuesday night at 7 CDT. Trey Shields (6-5, 5.22) is scheduled to pitch for the Cougars (39-25) against Michael Penn (4-2, 2.91) for the Bees (31-31).
