Cougars Fall in Second Straight
April 10, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill.- Stryker Trahan finally got the fireworks going at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, but it wasn't enough as the Cedar Rapids Kernels (2-0) took the second game of season opening series from the Cougars (0-2) by a score of 6-4 from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark Friday evening.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, the Cougars saw some life offensively as Colin Bray led off the frame with a single and Steve McQuail kept the inning alive with another base hit. Trahan took advantage of the wind blowing out to right field and smashed the first Cougar home run of the season well over the right field wall for a 3-2 advantage.
The lead was short lived as Jared Miller (0-1) continued to struggle allowing five runs, four earned, through the first three frames. Manager Mark Grudzielanek decided to get his first live look at reliever Nick Baker which was a solid move. Baker worked four innings of relief to stop the bleeding, allowing only one more Kernel run.
Despite the three-run homer off of John Curtiss (1-0), the Cedar Rapids pitching staff held the Cougars in check. The offense pushed Curtiss out in the sixth inning, but was only able to scratch across one more unearned run. Michael Theofanopoulos finished off a threatening sixth and worked a near perfect seventh and eighth innings.
C.K. Irby struck out the side for his first save of the season.
The Cougars and Kernels wrap up the season series on Saturday. Cedar Rapids sends out its left-hander Stephen Gonsalves against the Cougars' Jefferson Mejia. First pitch at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
