Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL - The Peoria Chiefs fell to 0-2 on the season with a 5-2 setback to the Quad Cities River Bandits on Friday night. The River Bandits scored three runs in the third and added two more over the next two innings for the victory.
Quad Cities broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with a two-out rally against Chiefs starter Austin Gomber. Jorge Martinez singled to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two down and Martinez on third, Mott Hyde singled on a two-strike pitch for a Bandits lead. Derek Fisher singled to left and Fisher scored on a base hit by Nick Tanielu. Jamie Ritchie walked to load the bases and another two-out hit from Ryan Bottger put Quad Cities up 3-0. The Chiefs escaped the inning on the Bottger single as Blake Drake's throw from left field to the plate was in time to get Tanielu.
Gomber's night ended in the fourth after a lead off walk and fielding error put Bandits at first and third. Robby Rowland took over on the mound and Quad Cities pulled off a double steal as Alfredo Gonzalez stole home after Steve Bean threw to second with Martinez on the move.
The Chiefs got on the board in the bottom of the fourth against Quad Cities starter Bryan Radziewski. Nick Thompson drew a one-out walk and Justin Ringo singled to right for his first hit of the season. Alex DeLeon doubled of the head of Bottger in right field as both Thompson and Ringo scored to cut the Bandits lead to 4-2. DeLeon was left at second as Radziewski struck out Bean and Drake popped out to first base.
Quad Cities extended their lead in the fifth inning against Rowland. Fisher led off with a single and stole second base ahead of a RBI triple from Tanielu. Rowland got two pop outs and a strikeout to escape the inning with Tanielu left at third base.
Gomber allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits over three innings. The lefty struck out one and walked two in his Chiefs debut. Rowland allowed one run on three hits over three innings of relief work while striking out two. Nick Lomascolo threw two shutout innings with two hits, three walks and four strikeouts. Kyle Grana allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three in one shutout inning.
