Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill.- The Kane County Cougars (0-1) kicked off their 25th anniversary season as the defending Midwest League Champions, but fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (1-0) by a score of 7-2 Thursday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Both teams' starting pitchers cruised in the beginning of the game as Cedar Rapids' Mat Batts (1-0) and the Cougars' Brent Jones (0-1) each allowed only one hit through the first five innings. The Kernels were first to strike in the sixth as they tattooed three runs on Jones while forcing him out of the frame. The Cougars retaliated with a Colin Bray RBI single in the sixth while knocking out Cedar Rapids' starter, but leaving the bases loaded the finish the frame.
Nick Gordon's triple helped push the Kernels' lead back to three runs in front 4-1. Cedar Rapids added three more in the ninth with five singles scattered throughout the inning.
The Cougars were able to cut down the deficit one run as Stryker Trahan aggressively took off from third to score on Fernery Ozuna's groundout. Trahan's run cut the Cedar Rapids lead 7-2, but was too little too late.
