Cougars calm the Whitecaps 7 - 3

Geneva, IL – The Kane County Cougars got two clutch, two out home runs for a come from behind 7 – 3 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps at Elfstrom Stadium Sunday afternoon. Vasili Spanos crushed his second grand slam of the season as the Cougars overcame a three run deficit to stay in first place in the Western division standings.

The Whitecaps (22-34) grabbed the early lead on a two out, two run homer from Garth McKinney his 11th of the year to make it a 2- 0 game. The Whitecaps scored another run with a single and a two out triple in the top of the fifth to take a 3 – 0 lead.

The Cougars (34-22) got their first big hit of the day as Brian Ingram slammed a two run shot over the right-center field wall for his 2nd dinger of the year to make a 3 – 2 ballgame. The Cougars were no-hit for the first four innings by the ‘Caps Brian Rogers.

The Whitecaps finally went to the bullpen in the bottom of the seventh inning and Kane County took advantage loading the bases with two singles and a walk bringing Vasili Spanos to the plate. The River Forrest IL. product cracked his second grand slam of the season to give the Cougars a 6 – 3 lead. It was the fifth time this year that the Cougars cleared the bases with a slam. The Cougars would add another run in the bottom of the eight to make it a 7 – 3 game.

Dan Fyvie who came in relief of Chris Dunwell in the sixth, became the winning pitcher going 1.2 innings of scoreless work before Jario Garcia came in and retired the final four hitters to pick up his 13th save of the year.

The Cougars will face the Whitecaps in game three of the four game set as left-hander Trent Peterson will take the mound to face right-hander Andy Baldwin in the 7:00 p.m. game.
