Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
After winning last night in 11 innings, the Battle Creek Yankees were unable to score runs late in Sunday's game, losing 6-3 to the Peoria Chiefs.
After a solo homer to lead off the game last night, center fielder Bryce Kartler was at it again on Sunday. Kartler doubled down the right field line and later went to third base on a passed ball. Eric Duncan's groundout to second base scored Kartler, and the Yankees had an early lead.
The Chiefs answered in the bottom of the 1st, as Yankees starting pitcher Tyler Clippard walked Calvin Hayes with one out. Daric Barton's double scored Hayes from first base, tying the game 1-1. Peoria scored two more times in the 2nd inning. Tyler Parker was hit by a Clippard fastball, and then John Santor followed with a single. Matt Pagnozzi hit a two-run double to score both men, making the score 3-1 after two innings.
The Chiefs scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third off of three Battle Creek errors. The Yanks had a scoring chance in the 4th. Singles by John Urick and Tommy Rojas and a walk to Enrique Cruz loaded the bases, but a fly out to left field ended the threat.
Battle Creek cut into the 4-1 deficit in their half of the 5th. Eric Duncan walked with one out. Matt Carson then followed with a mammoth 2-run homerun onto the street in deep left field, bringing the Yankees within two runs, 5-3.
Peoria, though, added another tally in the bottom of the 5th inning. Tyler Clippard finished the afternoon with 5 innings pitched. He allowed 5 runs (4 earned), 7 hits, hit 3 batters and made 2 errors. The Yankees totaled 5 errors in the game.
Peoria added an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th to make the score 6-3, and that's how this game ended.
Stuart Pomeranz, making his first start of the season for Peoria, got the win (1-0), and Tyler Clippard (4-6) took the hard-luck loss for Battle Creek.
