West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
The West Michigan Whitecaps enjoyed the lead for most of Sunday afternoon until the door was "slammed" in their faces. The Kane County Cougars came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Whitecaps, 7-3, in Illinois. A grand slam homer in the bottom of the seventh gave the Cougars the lead for the first time and they cruised from there.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when the 'Caps Garth McKinney blasted a two-run homer, his club-leading tenth of the season. One inning later, Eric Rodland tripled in a run for a 3-0 West Michigan lead.
After the Cougars hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 3-2 game, Kane County loaded the bases against three 'Caps relievers in the seventh and then unloaded them with the grand slam to take their second straight game in the series.
Eric Rodland had a single, double and triple to pace a six-hit 'Caps attack.
The two teams will meet again on Monday night at 8:00 Michigan time in game three of the series.
