South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN â Everyone likes to work overtime especially when they know they are being paid double and triple time. Sunday at the Cove, the Silver Hawks worked overtime, but it was the Cedar Rapids Kernels who were rewarded in the end, scoring three runs in the 13th inning to defeat the hawks 6-3.
The Kernels scored a run in the ninth against Silver Hawks closer Billy Biggs, who blew his first save chance of the season. Sean Rodriguez, who finished five-for-six, opened with a single, moved to second when Quan Cosby was walked. Howie Kendrick singled to center loading the bases momentarily, but Rodriguez advanced home when Lino Garcia, who was put in the lineup as a defensive replacement, could not field the ball, allowing Rodriguez to score.
The Hawks had a chance to win the game in the ninth inning. They loaded the bases after a Miguel Montero double opened the stanza. After an out was recorded, Jonny Kaplan reached on a walk and an out later, Lino Garcia was intentionally walked. With a full count, Tila Reynolds grounded harmlessly to shortstop to end the Hawks ninth inning threat.
The Kernels closed out the scoring in the 13th. Aaron Peel opened with a single and stole second. Two out later, he was plated on a Sean Rodriguez double. Rodriguez scored when Quan Cosby scored him on an RBI single and Cosby came around when Howie Kendrick doubled to right center for the Kernels three run inning.
The Silver Hawks and the Kernels continue their four game series Monday at The Cove. Monday is Budweiser Dollar Monday at The Cove presented by ABC 57 and B-100. Tickets, hot dogs, beer and Pepsi beverages are just $1. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
