Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Corpus Christi Hooks took the 8-2 win against the Springfield Cardinals, before 3,587 fans at Hammons Field on Friday night.
The Hooks (2-0) came out swinging with five runs against RHP Mike Mayers (L, 0-1) in the top of the first inning. After a single and a walk to start the game, 3B Colin Moran ripped an RBI double to start the scoring. DH Telvin Nash followed with a two-run single off the left field fence, before motoring to third base on a single from C Tyler Heineman. Nash then came in the final ninety feet on an RBI sacrifice fly from 1B Conrad Gregor, making it a four-run advantage. Heineman took second on a wild pitch, before moving to third on a groundout. With two away, RF Jon Kemmer brought in Heineman with an RBI single for the 5-0 lead. Kemmer, though, was thrown out at second on the play by RF Breyvic Valera, closing the frame with no further damage being done.
Hooks RHP Mark Appel (W, 1-0) kept the Cardinals (0-2) off the board through his first three innings, but SS Aledmys Diaz struck right away in the bottom of the fourth. Leading off the inning, Diaz laced a line drive that cleared the left field fence for a solo home run, the first long-ball of the season for the Cardinals, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
Corpus Christi responded quickly, striking with a pair of RBI doubles over the next two innings. CF Teoscar Hernandez connected with the run-scoring extra-base hit in the fifth, before SS Carlos Correa followed suit in the sixth, making it 7-1.
The Hooks added a tally in the top of the seventh against RHP Kurt Heyer. Hernandez led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, increasing the lead to 8-1.
Springfield refused to go down without a fight, edging closer in the bottom of the ninth against RHP Kyle Westwood (S, 1). CF Charlie Tilson started the stanza with a stand-up triple that skipped by the diving RF Jon Kemmer. Diaz promptly plated Tilson with an RBI groundout to second base, chipping the deficit down. However, Westwood retired the next two in order, capping his four-inning save to close the 8-2 win for the Hooks.
