Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

SPRINGFIELD, MO - Corpus Christi utilized a 16-hit attack while Mitch Lambson and Angel Baez teamed to yield one run over the final five frames Thursday night as the Hooks opened 2015 with a 9-4 triumph over the Cardinals at Hammons Field.

All nine men in Corpus Christi's lineup reached base with seven recording hits. The Hooks scored seven of their nine runs with two outs.

Tony Kemp led the charge, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs, one walk and a stolen base. Kemp also battled a stiff northwesterly wind to make a slick over-the-shoulder sliding catch in shallow right field, robbing Aledmys Diaz of a lead-off knock in the fifth.

With two away in the fourth, Brandon Meredith belted the first pitch from Nick Petree over the left-field fence for a three-run home run and a 3-2 Corpus Christi lead.

Springfield squared the score in the home half thanks to an RBI double by Patrick Wisdom. Centerfielder Teoscar Hernandez and shortstop Carlos Correa limited the damage, gunning down Anthony Garcia at home plate. Tyler Heineman absorbed contact and applied the tag.

Kent Emanuel, making his Double-A debut, permitted seven hits and two walks over 3.2 innings. He threw 45 of 75 pitches for strikes.

Heineman, who went 2-for-4 with a double, worked a two-out walk in the fifth and scored all the way from first base on Conrad Gregor's wind-aided pop fly single.

The Hooks' 4-3 advantage expanded to a four-run margin in the sixth. A couple of Ryan Sherriff walks led to doubles by Correa and Telvin Nash. Correa went 1-for-4 with two RBIs in his Double-A debut.

Gregor's third single of the night and a two-bagger by Hernandez opened the Corpus Christi seventh. Two outs later, Kemp chopped a base hit over the head of a leaping Jonathan Rodriguez at first base, handing the Hooks a 9-3 edge.

Lambson earned the victory by tossing 2.1 scoreless innings. Baez authored a three-inning save, holding the Cards to one run on three hits and one walk.

The series continues Friday night with the tandem of Mark Appel and Kyle Westwood taking the hill for Corpus Christi. Springfield counters with Mike Mayers. First pitch 7:10.
