CornBelters Give up Leads and Fall in Doubleheader Sweep at Joliet

JOLIET, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, held early leads in both games but lost both ends of a doubleheader to the Joliet Slammers by scores of 6-4 and 9-6 on Saturday at Silver Cross Field.

The CornBelters continued the trend of fast starts in the opener by scoring three times in the first inning on RBIs from Aaron Dudley, Richard Lucas and Sam Judah for a quick 3-0 advantage. Dudley collected his second RBI of the day in the third inning when he drove in Mark Micowski, who led off the frame with a single to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

The Slammers tallied in the third inning with three straight hits to load the bases and a two-out, two-run single by Hunter Ridge to cut the Belters lead in half to 4-2. Joliet took a 6-4 lead in the fifth with a four-run frame with a pair of lead-off walks that scored on an error and a fielder's choice, followed by another throwing error plus a double by Jack Cleary.

Kevin Walter (1-2) worked six innings for the win while Mike Schweiss (2-5) suffered his fourth straight loss, working four and a third innings. Navery Moore pitched the final frame for his seventh save.

In the nightcap, the CornBelters against opened the offense quickly with a two-run double by Richard Lucas in the first inning.

The Slammers countered in the second inning with an RBI double to the right center wall by Russell Moldenhauer and a sacrifice fly to center by Alfredo Rodriguez to knot the score at 2-2, then took a 4-2 lead on a two-run homer out of the park by Nate Roberts in the third inning. A solo line drive home run to left by Rodriguez put the Slammers in front 5-2 in the fourth inning.

The CornBelters equalized the nightcap in the fifth inning when Chirino drew a lead-off walk and scored on a base hit by Pat McKenna. A two-run, two-out single by Aaron Dudley evened the score at 5-5.

Joliet posted the second come-from-behind win on the day when they scored four times in the sixth inning on two hits, two walks and two errors.

David Kubiak (3-3) earned the win in relief while Victor Beriguete (2-2) took the loss.

The CornBelters are now 21-16 and in third place in the Frontier League West Division while the Slammers improve to 17-21 and remain in fourth in the division. The Belters conclude the road trip with a 5:05 p.m. first pitch on Sunday against the Slammers. Lefty Kevin Brahney (4-2, 3.85 ERA) starts on the mound for the Belters.
