
Slammers Take Two in DH against CornBelters

Joliet Slammers News Release
Joliet, IL- The Joliet Slammers (17-21) took on the Normal CornBelters (21-16) in a Saturday double header and came out with two victories.
In game one, pitcher Kevin Walter had a rocky first inning giving up three runs. LF Cameron Monger led off with a single to center. He advanced to second after a pickoff throw got away from 1B Hunter Ridge. CF Mark Micowski reached base via the walk to put two on with no outs. 1B Aaron Dudley singled to drive in Monger making it 1-0. 3B Patrick Lucas corked an RBI single as well, pushing the lead to 2-0. DH Sam Judah lined a ball back to Walter that was knocked down, but Dudley was able to score on the play. At the end of one inning Normal led by three.
Micowski continued to hit well with a leadoff base-knock in the top of the third. He then stole second. McKenna reached base the hard way taking one off of his back. With two on and no outs Dudley singled to left scoring Micowski to make it 4-0. On the play the ball got away so McKenna stood on third, Dudley to second. DH Sam Judah was walked intentionally to load the bases with one out. Walter would get the next two hitters to end the inning.
2B Max Casper cracked the first hit for Joliet in the bottom of the third, singling to right with one out against Micahel Schweiss. CF Charlie White followed with a textbook bunt single. LF Phil Bates loaded the bases with a single to center field. With two outs 1B Hunter Ridge singled to left, scoring White and Bates to cut Normal's lead to 4-2.
The Slammers added a run in the fifth. With two on, Bates bounced the ball back to the pitcher Schweiss. His overthrew third trying to get the lead runner, Casper, allowing the Slammers second baseman to come around and score. With two in scoring position and the CornBelters now up 4-3, 3B Mike Garza hit a ground ball to second scoring White to tie the game. With new pitcher Stephen Frey in the game, Ridge creamed a single to right field. Bates scored and the Slammers led 5-4 after the fifth.
With a 6-4 lead P Navery Moore came in to close things out for the Slammers and retired the side and recorded his seventh save of the year. The Slammers extend their winning streak to four games. The Merchants and Manufacturers Player of the Game was Hunter Ridge, he went two for three and drove in three runs.
Kevin Walter got the win (1-2), the loss went to Michael Schweiss (2-5) and Navery Moore grabbed the save (7).
In game two, south paw Hunter Ackerman took the hill for the Slammers. With two outs SS Patrick McKenna and 1B Aaron Dudley reached base on back to back singles in the first inning. They would later come around to score on a throwing error by Max Casper, putting Normal up 2-0 after the first frame.
Joliet would get those runs back in the bottom of the second when RF Hunter Ridge led off with a walk. LF Phil Bates followed with a bullet single to center field. DH Russell Moldenhauer doubled to right center to score Ridge. SS Alfredo Rodriguez made a contribution of his own with a sacrifice fly to center that plated Bates from third to tie the game at two.
CF Charlie White led off the Slammers' third with a single to center and then stole second. 1B Nate Roberts put the Slammers up by two with a two run shot to right, his third homerun of the year, seventeenth RBI.
The Slammers kept the fireworks going in the fourth frame. Rodriguez blasted his first homerun of the year, a solo shot to left field. The long ball put the Slammers up 5-2 after the fourth.
The CornBelters came back with three runs in the fifth, all coming with two outs. With one on and two down, Micowski singled. SS Patrick McKenna's hit drove in one run and put runners at second and third. A single by Dudley scored two, running Ackerman from the game and tying the score at 5-5.
Joliet would break things open in their half of the sixth. Bates trotted down to first with a leadoff walk. Two hitters later C John Cannon reached on an infield single. Max Casper walked and pitcher Victor Beriguete was pulled to end his appearance. Race Parmenter came in for Normal with the bases loaded to face Charlie White. With two strikes White put the Slammers in front by two with a single. Nate Roberts chopped a ball to the right side that could not be handled by 2B Santiago Chirino, this allowed Casper to score extending the lead to three. Mike Garza's grounded a ball to third that got through the infield. White came around to score making it 9-5 Slammers.
David Kubiak toed the rubber for the top of the seventh. With LF Cameron Monger on second SS Patrick McKenna singled to left. Monger came around to score cutting the Slammers lead to three. The rally was halted when Aaron Dudley flied out to right to end the game. Our Merchants and Manufacturers Players of the Game were Nate Roberts and Charlie White. Roberts went one for three with a two run homerun and White was responsible for the go ahead single in the Slammers' sixth. He finished two for four with two runs driven in.
David Kubiak (3-3) earned the win in relief. The Slammers will go for the sweep against the CornBelters on Sunday at 5:05pmCT. You can watch the game live on http://www.jolietslammers.com/gameday/slammervision/.
