CornBelters Drop Road Trip Finale at River City

O'FALLON, Mo. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, dropped the final game of their road trip 6-2 to the River City Rascals on Sunday night at CarShield Field.
The Rascals opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single by Zach Lavy, then increased their lead to 2-0 on a solo home run by Paul Kronenfeld in the fourth for all of the scoring off Belters starter Connor Root, who went five innings and gave up eight hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
River City increased their lead to 5-0 in the sixth inning when Thomas Nicoll surrendered two singles and a three-run homer by Braxton Martinez.
Normal dented the scoreboard in the seventh on an RBI single by Michael Baca, but the Rascals countered in the bottom half of the frame on a Clint Freeman base hit to give the hosts a 6-1 lead.
The CornBelters cut the deficit to 6-2 in the eighth thanks to a run-scoring single by Derrick Loveless.
Jonny Ortiz (6-2) earned the win with seven innings of four-hit ball, giving up one run (earned) on three walks and five strikeouts. Root (4-2) suffered the loss.
The CornBelters (43-38) remain in the Frontier League West Division lead by one game over the Southern Illinois Miners and the Rascals. The Belters host the Florence Freedom, who are tied for fourth in the division 2 1/2 games back, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the Corn Crib. Game time each night is 7:05.
