CornBelters drop final game of series

MARION - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, dropped the final game of the series to the Southern Illinois Miners 8-1 on Thursday night at Rent One Park.

The Miners used two long balls in their first time up to grab a quick 3-0 lead. Alvaro Ramirez reached on a dropped third strike, followed by a home run by Jake Kaase to the right field bullpen. Chad Maddox added the third run on a two-out homer to left. Southern Illinois added a run in the second inning on a single by Chris Anderson, who went to second on a passed ball, and a double by Will Block to increase the lead to 4-0.

The CornBelters entered the scoring column in the third inning when Bobby Rinard tripled to left center with one out and scored on a ground out by Sam Judah, but the Belters collected three more hits in the frame and could not add any more runs.

Southern Illinois increased the lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning when Cory Harrilchak singled with one out and came home on a double to the left field corner with two outs by Chad Maddox.

The Miners extended the advantage in the seventh to 8-1 when Jake Kaase reached on an error and Cory Harrilchak walked, followed by singles from Cannon Lester and Chad Maddox and a fielder's choice RBI by Ken Gregory.

Shawn Gilblair (8-4) earned the win with a seven-inning outing while Jacob Liedka (2-8) went six innings in the loss.

The CornBelters continue the road trip with a three-game weekend series at Evansville. The Belters plan to start left-hander Tyler Stovall (1-7, 5.92 ERA) against Otters lefty Matt Crim (2-7, 4.37 ERA). Pre-game on WJBC.com begins at 6:20 p.m. with first pitch on Friday night at Bosse Field scheduled for 6:35.
