
Miners Belt Their Way to Victory

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners powered their way to victory over the Normal CornBelters as they won 8-1 to take the three game series at Rent One Park. Shawn Gilblair earned his eighth victory of the season (2nd in FL) by pitching seven strong innings and only allowing one run. He gave up nine hits, one walk and struck out five batters.
The Miners took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Jake Kaase hit a two run home run off CornBelters starter Jacob Liedka. That home run was Kaase's 11th home run of the season. Chad Maddox hit a solo home run with two outs in the inning off Liedka to give the Miners a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 2nd inning off Liedka, Will Block hit a double and a RBI to score newly signed catcher Chris Anderson to give the Miners a 4-0 lead. The CornBelterrs scored a run in the top of the third inning off Shawn Gilblair, their only run of the game as left fielder Sam Judah hit a RBI ground out to score Bobby Rinard who hit a triple in the previous at bat.
Liedka gave up another run to the Miners in the bottom of the fifth inning as Chad Maddox hit a double and a RBI to bring in Cory Harrilchak to give the Miners a 5-1 lead. Liedka would go six innings and allowed five runs (three earned). He gave up nine hits, one walk and struck out four batters.
The Miners would get to the CornBelters bullpen as Rich Ruff came in to relief for Normal in the bottom of the seventh inning. One run scored off a Cannon Lester base hit to give the Miners a 6-1 lead. Chad Maddox came through with another RBI single to give the Miners a 7-1 lead and Ken Gregory capped the inning with a RBI ground out to give the Miners a 8-1 lead . Ruff gave up two hits, three runs (one earned), walked one and struck out one batter.
Nick Cicio and Steven Grife each pitched an inning in relief. Cicio struck out two batters in the eighth inning and Grife gave up one hit and struck out three batters to close out the game in the ninth inning. The Miners would win the game 8-1.
With the win, the Miners improve to 40-29 on the season and trail Traverse City by four games in the Eastern Division. The Miners now head to Wuerfel Park to take on the Beach Bums beginning Friday. First pitch will be at 6:05 pm with the Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame show at 5:45 with Mike Ventola.
