Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (27-41) @ EVANSVILLE OTTERS (31-37)
Thursday, August 2- - 6:35 p.m. CT
Bosse Field - Evansville, IN
Game #69 - Road Game #33 (27-41), (14-18)
RHP #28 Jim Schult (5-4, 4.30 ERA) vs. RHP #43 Bryce Morrow (5-6, 4.20 ERA)
Last time out...
The Evansville Otters used a five-run seventh inning to defeat the Slammers by a score of 6-3 last night at Bosse Field. After a scoreless two and a half, Evansville scored first when Luis Uribe went deep to take a one-run lead. However, Eric McGee tied it up with a solo home run of his own to make it 1-1. Lis gave the Slammers a 3-1 lead in the fifth, doubling to bring home Patrick Norris and Abel Nieves. The Otters, though, would go on to score five unanswered runs in the seventh inning. Dan Killian started the rally, scoring a run on a double-play, and Runey Davis gave them the lead on a two-run double. Up one, Taylor Black helped Evansville pull ahead on an RBI single to win it 6-3. Matt Sommo tossed six innings and surrendered three runs, but it was Mike Barsotti who gave up three and was stuck with the loss. Daniel Carela and Amalio Diaz finished off the contest for Joliet.
For Starters...
Jim Schult is coming off a victory over the Windy City ThunderBolts on July 28. He went six and a third innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits. Schult did not walk anyone and struck out six. Schult is currently tied for the team lead with Steven Maxwell for the most wins with five on the season. He has struck out a team-leading 65 batters on the year. Schult began the year in the bullpen but has thrived since entering the rotation, winning four starts, while only losing two and notching three no-decisions. On the road Schult has been particularly good as he sports a 3.55 ERA away from Silver Cross Field in 2012. Schult brings professional experience to the fold as the Eastern Connecticut State alum spent 2011 in the Canadian-American Association with the NYSL Federals. The traveling team struggled but Schult finished the season with 10 starts and his ERA was the best on the team among pitchers with 10 or more starts that season. While at Eastern Connecticut State, Schult was named the co-D-III National Player of the Year in 2011.
Trying to avoid the sweep...
The Slammers have been swept four times this season, once on the road at the hands of the Schaumburg Boomers. They will look to avoid being swept for the fifth time this season tonight. A win tonight would even the season series with Evansville at three.
The wrong kind of streak...
The Slammers have matched their longest losing streak of the year at four games. This is their sixth four-game losing streak of the season.
A down season...
The Slammers have 41 losses on the year, more than their entire regular season loss total (40) of 2011.
Road woes...
The Slammers have lost five in a row away from Silver Cross Field, their longest road losing streak of the season.
Leading after six...
Despite their struggles in 2012, Joliet is still 17-4 when leading after six innings.
Abel is able...
Abel Nieves leads or is tied for the team lead in all three Triple Crown categories with a.358 batting average, six home runs and 37 RBI. Erik Lis also has 37 RBI. David Christensen has nine home runs on the season but all nine came with the now defunct London Rippers.
Save me...
Last season Joliet native Ryan Quigley set the Frontier League's single-season record with 28 saves. Quigley is now in the Padres organization but former Angels farmhand Amalio Diaz has picked up right where Quigley left off. Diaz is second in the league with 16 saves in 17 attempts.
Error indicator...
The Slammers are 9-29 in games when they make an error. They are 18-12 in games when they do not.
