Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce that import receiver Jeremaine Copeland has been honoured by the Canadian Football League as the offensive player of the month for September.
Copeland has been impressive in 2009 and continued his torrid pace in September, recording 18 catches for 343 yards and four touchdowns in four games. The Tennessee product was a key contributor in a month that saw the Red and White go 3-1 and climb into a tie for first in the ultra-competitive West Division.
Copeland had the only Stamps receiving major in a 32-8 victory over Edmonton on Labour Day and then had two scores, including the game-winning touchdown with 22 seconds remaining, in Edmonton on Sept. 11. He was honoured as the CFL's player of the week for his efforts in Week 11 and closed out the month with two solid performances against Hamilton and BC including the Stamps' only passing touchdown - a five-yard, highlight-reel grab - in a 27-18 victory over the Lions on Sept. 25 at McMahon Stadium.
The nine-year CFL veteran leads the league with 12 receiving majors and ranks second among the league's receivers with 886 yards.
The monthly honour is the first for a Stamps' player since September of 2007, when quarterback Henry Burris was awarded offensive player of the month. Stamps players have been recognized on six occasions in 2009 as part of the CFL's weekly awards. Copeland was honoured as offensive player of the week in Week 3 and 11, while receiver Nik Lewis received the honour for Week 9. Linebacker Dwaine Carpenter was named the defensive player of the week for Week 3 while defensive lineman Jim Davis was acknowledged for his defensive efforts in Week 11. Returner/receiver Titus Ryan was honoured in Week 9 as the special teams player of the week. The Stampeders had nine players receive player-of-the-week recognition in 2008.
The next Stamps home game is Oct. 3 against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Kickoff is 5 p.m. at McMahon Stadium. Tickets are still available and fans are encouraged to pick up their tickets by contacting Ticketmaster (403.777.0000 or online at Ticketmaster.ca) or visiting any local Safeway or Sport Chek location.
