 Frederick Keys

Copeland Controls Dash

August 11, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

The Keys broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning with two runs off LHP Joe Serafin and held on to defeat the Winston-Salem Dash, 2-1, on Thursday night. In his second start as a Frederick Key, RHP Scott Copeland tossed another gem as he improved to 2-0 in Frederick. Copeland has not allowed a run in 12 innings of work as a Key.

With the game tied a zero in the top of the third, CF Miguel Abreu made a nice diving play to keep the scoreless tie intact. After walking 1B Andy Wilkins and hitting DH Ian Gac, Copeland turned his attention to LF Brady Shoemaker. With two outs in the inning, Shoemaker blooped a Copeland offering into center that looked to be trouble but Abreu raced in and made a diving catch to end the frame.

Copeland exited the contest after tossing six scoreless innings. On the night, he walked four, struck out four, and scattered four hits.

After holding Frederick scoreless for 11 consecutive innings, the Keys finally scored some runs off Joe Serafin. RF Steve Bumbry led off the inning and was hit in the shoulder on a 1-2 pitch from Serafin. After 2B Jonathan Schoop put down a sac bunt to move Bumbry to second, SS Manny Machado struck out on a breaking ball from Serafin. Bumbry, however, swiped third base on the play. The next man to the plate was 1B Aaron Baker. Baker singled to center to bring home Bumbry as the game's first run. Miguel Abreu followed Baker's at bat with a RBI double to right-center. Abreu was thrown out at third after he over slid the base.

The two-run advantage proved to be enough as the Dash scored a run in the eighth but were held scoreless in the ninth as Sean Gleason closed out the game.

Copeland improved to 2-0 in the Carolina League with both his wins coming against Winston-Salem. Joe Serafin dropped to 4-9 on the night while Gleason notched his league-leading 32nd save of the year.

Frederick and Winston-Salem will play game two of their four-game series on Friday night. RHP Ryohei Tanaka (7-4, 3.67) will start for the Keys while the Dash will send LHP Matt Wickswat (5-2, 3.71) to the hill. First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

On Friday night, Jerry "The King" Lawler will be in Frederick signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. For tickets, contact the Keys Box Office at 1-887-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
