Pelicans Game Notes

August 11, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LHP Miguel De Los Santos (3-3, 2.95) at RHP Erik Davis (0-1, 3.38)

LAST TIME WE MET: Five days ago, Miguel De Los Santos faced Erik Davis and it was nearly a historic night at BB&T Coastal Field. De Los Santos and Zach Osborne teamed up on Saturday to put the Pelicans two outs away from the franchise's second no-hitter before Francisco Soriano's clean one-out single in the ninth broke it up. The only no-no the Pelicans have ever tossed was on July 23, 2000 against Frederick, when Tim Spooneybarger worked a hitless first inning before Christian Parra closed it out with six hitless frames.

CHAD LEFT HANGING: Chad Bell has been terrific since moving into the starting staff for good, but he doesn't have any wins to show for it. He retired 15 of 16 batters in a doubleheader spot start victory on July 27 and earned a rotation spot after Robbie Ross was promoted to Double-A Frisco. In his first outing as a full-fledged member of the rotation on August 4 in Kinston, Bell allowed one run on three hits in six innings, but the bullpen blew a lead and he was stuck with a no decision. Last night he matched a career-high with seven innings pitched, and allowed only two earned runs, but he received no support from his offense and took the loss. Bell also went seven innings in his last two starts with Short Season-A Spokane in July 2010 before earning a call-up to low-A Hickory for the rest of the season. Starting with the Pelicans' famed 23-inning game in Kinston on June 12, when Bell struck out eight and shut out the K-Tribe from the 18th through the 22nd, he has a 1.58 ERA (7 ER/40 IP) over 13 appearances.

28 DAYS LATER: The Pelicans had a slate of 21 scheduled home games out of 27, spanning 28 days. There was one rainout postponement and during the stretch, the Birds started out 10-2 at home, but lost five of the last eight home games to finish 13-7.

BECAUSE SEVEN, EIGHT, NINE: Heading into tonight's game in Woodbridge, the Pelicans have three players that rank in the Carolina League's top ten in batting average. Santiago Chirino is seventh in the circuit at .274, Jared Bolden in eighth with a .273 mark and Jared Prince, also at .273, sits three ten-thousandths of a point back in ninth place.
