K-Tribe Blasts Sox in Opener

SALEM, VA (August 11, 2011)- The Kinston Indians (24-21, 62-52) thumped the Salem Red Sox (21-25, 52-63) by a score of 11-1 at LewisGale Field in Salem Memorial Ballpark Thursday Night. The K-Tribe used a seven run eighth inning and brilliant pitching by Clayton Cook en-route to the victory. Clayton Cook pitched 6 & 2/3 innings scattering nine hits only walking one batter and striking out four, en-route to a win. The victory brought his record to (8-8).

The Kinston Indians opened the scoring in the top of the forth inning. Salem starting pitcher Drake Britton walked Jeremie Tice to begin the inning and then Jesus Aguilar singled Tice to third base. After a Justin Toole walk, which loaded the bases, Roberto Perez singled right up the middle scoring two runners. The K-Tribe enjoyed a two run lead headed to the fifth inning.

In the fifth, the K-Tribe added on. Tyler Holt walked and then stole his third base of the game, as he took second. A fly ball to center field moved Holt to third base with one out. Britton was knocked from the game after a walk to Adam Abraham. Pete Ruiz entered for Salem and promptly walked Tice. With Aguilar at the plate, a ball pitched out of Ruiz's hand and skipped past the catcher for a wild pitch. Alert base running by Tyler Holt allowed him scamper home to score another run, giving the K-Tribe a three run lead.

In the bottom half of the fifth the Salem Red Sox got on the board. Shannon Wilkerson lead off with a single and then Josue Peley hit into a fielder's choice. Derrick Gibson walked, and Peter Hissey singled home Peley cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The score remained the same until the top of the seventh when Kinston added on. Back-to-back doubles by Jesus Aguilar and Jeremie Tice plated another run and extended the K-Tribe lead to 4-1.

In the eighth Kinston put the game out of reach. Kinston's first four men reached in the inning, they all came around to score. The big hits were a 2 run single by Jordan Casas and a bases clearing double by Adam Abraham. The K-Tribe pushed four runs across the board and there was still nobody out. Pete Ruiz was chased from the game and Will Latimer entered the game. Latimer game a single to Tice and then a double to Augilar, which scored Adam Abraham and advanced Tice to third base. The score was 9-0. Justin Toole reached on an error and that plated two more runs making the score 11-1. The tenth man up to bat in the inning was Roberto Perez who grounded into the 6-4-3 double play. In the inning seven runs came across home plate and Kinston enjoyed a double-digit lead.

Drake Britton got the loss and saw his record fall to (1-12); Clayton Cook earned the win and improved to (8-8).

The Red Sox and Indians will resume the four game series Friday night at 7:05pm in Salem, Virginia.
