Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, MD (AUGUST 11, 2011) - Scott Copeland out-dueled Joe Serafin as the Keys edged the Dash 2-1 on Thursday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Copeland threw six scoreless innings for the second straight outing against Winston-Salem and Frederick earned the series opening victory.
The two clubs entered the night in first place in their respective divisions and neither offense could muster much over the first half of the ballgame. Copeland (2-0) walked four and hit a batter in the first three innings, but the Dash (26-19, 58-57) could not get a big hit when needed and were held scoreless against the Frederick starter.
While Winston missed several scoring chances, Serafin did not allow the Keys (28-18, 69-46) a baserunner until there was one out in the fourth inning. He finally yielded a run in the sixth when he hit Steve Bumbry to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt and a stolen base moved Bumbry to third with two outs before Aaron Baker drove him in with a single to center field, snapping the scoreless tie. Miguel Abreu gave Frederick an insurance run with an RBI double that scored Baker from first to make it 2-0.
The Dash finally cracked the scoring column in the top of the eighth. Jared Mitchell doubled off Jason Gurka to start the inning and advanced to third on a groundout. New reliever Ryan O'Shea entered and got Ian Gac to ground his first pitch back to mound. Mitchell was caught too far off third and was tagged out after a rundown while Gac moved up to second base on the play. He scored on Brady Shoemaker's single to right to get Winston to within a run. Shoemaker was stranded at second base to end the inning when Juan Silverio's deep fly ball was retrieved by Kipp Shutz a step in front of the left field wall.
Sean Gleason pitched the ninth and allowed a pair of two-out singles, but got Mitchell to strike out on a high fastball to end the game and preserve the Frederick win. Gleason earned his league-leading 32nd save, giving Copeland his second victory. The righty, who posted a 6.58 ERA in 20 South Atlantic League starts before a promotion to the Keys last week, has thrown 12 scoreless innings in two Carolina League starts, both against the Dash.
Serafin (4-9) was charged with the loss despite allowing three fewer baserunners than Copeland allowed in one additional inning. He gave up two runs in seven innings with six strikeouts and one walk.
The Dash out-hit the Keys 8-4, but lost for just the seventh time in 46 games when recording more hits than the opposition.
The four-game series continues on Friday night. LHP Matt Wickswat (5-2, 3.71) looks to bounce back from a tough recent outing against RHP Ryohei Tanaka (7-4, 3.67). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the audio broadcast begins at 6:45 at www.wsdash.com .
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for a pair of games against the Lynchburg Hillcats on Monday, August 15 at 6 p.m. Fans may purchase tickets for every game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or by visiting www.wsdash.com .
