Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
PASCO, Wash. - Mike Connolly and Cory Taylor combined for a shutout Saturday night as the Volcanoes defeated the Tri-City Dust Devils 1-0 at Gesa Stadium.
Connolly (2-1, 3.55) was fantastic for Salem-Keizer, firing six shutout innings while striking out a season-high seven. He scattered five hits and walked one on the evening.
The only run of the game came when the Volcanoes stung together some two-out hits in the second. Scott Price singled with two outs in the frame - his first hit with Salem-Keizer - and advanced to second on a wild pitch. John Riley then tripled down the right field line, scoring Price.
That was all Connolly and Taylor needed. Taylor came on in relief in the seventh, fanning seven batters in only three innings of work. The duo combined for a season-high 14 strikeouts while only walking one batter. It was Taylor's first save of the season.
Volcanoes catcher Brad Moss had a tremendous night behind the plate, throwing out three runners at third base. His final throw caught Kodie Tidwell stealing third to end the eighth inning.
Taylor ran into trouble in the ninth, allowing back-to-back singles with one out, but he struck out the final two batters he faced to end the game and secure the save.
Tri-City starter Brett Kennedy (0-1, 1.76) lasted only 2 2/3 innings, allowing the game's only run, before the Dust Devils bullpen tossed 6 1/3 frames.
It was Salem-Keizer's second shutout of the season.
Player of the Game: Mike Connolly tossed a beauty for Salem-Keizer, holding Tri-City scoreless through six innings. He struck out a season-high seven batters.
