Condors win fifth straight, beat Utah 6-5

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Bakersfield Condors extended their winning streak to five in a row, and seven of their last eight, with a 6-5 victory against the Utah Grizzlies before 2,585 fans at The E Center on Wednesday night. The win moves the Condors one point ahead of the Phoenix RoadRunners in the National Conference Standings.

RW Chad Painchaud gave the Condors (21-27-6, 48pts) an early lead, snapping home a loose puck just 37 seconds into the game. Bakersfield added to it's lead at 16:54, when C Bruce Graham roofed a wrist shot over the glove of Grizzlies G Peter Mannino on the power play. Utah netted one of their own at 18:24 to get on the board, but the Condors responded just 57 seconds later with a one-timer goal from F Dave Bonk to reclaim the two-goal lead. The Condors entered the first intermission ahead 3-1 after a commanding first period, in which Bakersfield out-shot Utah, 19-8.

The Grizzlies (18-17-15, 51pts) promptly erased the deficit and took a one-goal lead of their own, netting three consecutive tallies in the first 13:10 of the second period. The Condors answered just 1:40 after Utah took the lead, as F Matt Pope connected on the power play to tie it, 4-4. Despite the Grizzlies out-shooting the Condors in the second, 19-13, Bakersfield led in shots on goal through 40 minutes, 32-27.

Utah opened the third period with an early goal to take a 5-4 lead, but Bakersfield refused to go away. The Condors tied the game yet again at 6:25 with Painchaud's second of the contest, and took the lead at 14:59 with the eventual game-winner scored by Bonk and set up by Painchaud. Utah out-shot the Condors 13-5 in the final frame, but G Yutaka Fukufuji stopped 12 shots in the third and 35 overall in the Condors 6-5 win. Five Condors had multiple points games: Bonk (2g-2a), Painchaud (2g-2a), D Donny Grover (0g-3a), LW Mark Derlago (0g-2a) and D Ryan Mahrle (0g-2a). Click here to view the complete box score. The Coach's Show will return to it's normal time on Thursday, Feb. 26 from 5 - 6 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1230, live from the Hungry Hunter Restaurant.

Bakersfield returns home for Fighting Cancer Hockey-Thon Weekend, with two afternoon games against the Victoria Salmon Kings. Saturday, Feb. 21 the Veggie Tales come to town, sponsored by Pirate 93.1 and DMW Industries Inc., with a special appearance by Bakersfield native and NY Giants QB David Carr, who will give a motivational speech after the game. The puck drops at noon.

On Sunday at 2 p.m. is the conclusion of the Hockey-Thon, sponsored by KBAK-29, KUZZ 107.9 and the Bakersfield Californian. Don't miss the Condors Alumni vs. West Coast All-Stars Alumni Game at noon. Doors open at 11:45 a.m.

Both games on Saturday and Sunday will be televised live on Bright House Networks Ch. 21, and will be available On Demand on Ch. 300 starting the following day.
