Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Ontario, CA - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Ontario Reign met on Wednesday night. Victoria started Julien Ellis in net while Ontario countered with Jeff Zatkoff.
Wes Goldie notched his 40th goal of the season in pure Goldie fashion. The Victoria captain forced Reign defenseman David Walker to turn back in the slot area as he attempted to skate out of the zone. Goldie jammed up the defenseman on the forecheck, stole the puck and slide it through the legs of Zatkoff for the 1-0 Victoria lead. Ontario responded with less than five minutes to go in the period. Walker let a shot go from the right hash marks. Mike Howe knocked it down to the right of Ellis. The right winger then spun around and fed Dale Reinhardt who was diving down the left side. Reinhardt mad no mistake burying it behind Ellis to tie the game at 1-1. That would be the score through 20 minutes.
The Reign jumped out to a 2-1 lead when Reinhardt collected his second of the night when he found a Howe rebound in the slot and deposited it behind Ellis. Ontario took a two goal lead when Andrew Martens jammed a rebound past Ellis. The Kings' netminder had no chance as he had both defenseman Matt Kelly and Reign forward Jon Rheault on his lap. Victoria would close the gap before the period ended when Olivier Labelle threw a shot towards the net from the right side wall. It bounced off Reign defender Walker and then Chris St. Jacques tipped it in. The score would stay 3-2 after two periods.
The Reign would re-establish their two goal lead on a strange play. Victoria's Travis Ramsey picked up the puck off a Salmon Kings' face-off win to the left of Ellis and looked to carry the puck behind his own net, but the puck slipped off his stick and rolled into the Victoria net with just 2:42 remaining in the third period. Mike Holloway would catch a stunned Kings team and make the lead 5-2 just over a minute later. Matt Kelly would tack on a goal for Victoria. Reign 5 Salmon Kings 3
Victoria finished 0-3=0% on the power play, while Ontario finished 1/5=20%. The Reign out shot the Salmon Kings 34-28.
The Salmon Kings continue their California road trip on Saturday afternoon in Bakersfield. The Kings will face the Condors at noon. The Salmon Kings return to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday, March 11th to open a four-game set against the Ontario Reign. For tickets call 220-7777 or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.
